Commissioner Ben SorensenBen Sorensen serves as the Vice Mayor of the City Commission and represents Fort Lauderdale’s District 4 as City Commissioner. He brings a mix of enthusiasm for public service, faith, and military experience to his role. Ben is a steadfast advocate for ethical and transparent government, and he works diligently to ensure residents’ voices shape city priorities and progress. Ben draws on his experience as a Navy Reserve Chaplain, educator, and small business owner to foster engagement and bring people together to shape meaningful solutions for our community. 

Ben has led transformative investments in stormwater and waterway infrastructure, expanded housing affordability, and launched initiatives to restore mangroves and improve water quality citywide. He has advanced public safety, neighborhood traffic calming, and responsible growth, helping Fort Lauderdale thrive with innovation, inclusion, and sustainability. Focused on long-term resiliency and transparency, Ben continues to build strong partnerships that make the city more interconnected and prepared for the future.

Ben was sworn in as City Commissioner for District 4 on December 3, 2024, after prior service from 2018 to 2022, including two terms as Vice Mayor.  He is a third-generation Presbyterian minister and has served as a volunteer chaplain for both the Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood Police Departments. Ben currently serves as a volunteer chaplain at Broward Health Medical Center. Ben also served as an Intelligence Officer in the Navy Reserve for 17 years before redesignating to become a Chaplain in 2025. His decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. As CEO and founder of Sorensen Consulting, Inc., Ben provides executive coaching and leadership training nationwide. He holds six academic degrees, including a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University, and a Doctor of Ministry from Amridge University.


Ben is married to Anna Sorensen, who serves as the South Florida Senior Advancement Director for University Advancement at NSU Florida. Together, they are the proud parents of two daughters and two rescue dogs, Ginger and Hamilton. Ben can be reached by email at
